• That’s a really good idea, but I’m afraid I don’t have the time to make custom ones sorry! (I think mine took around 6 hours.) ^^; But even though it was time consuming, it’s super easy to make your own! All I did was cut out my coupon from a couple layers of fabric, embroidered some of it with sewing thread and then painted the rest. • My favorites are usually Salvation Army thrift stores, but honestly even some of those can be range from really expensive to cheap. You just have to go to a bunch of different stores until you find one with affordable prices. :] Also, I tend not to buy anything too expensive, even at my favorite stores. That’s why all the thrifted items I post are so cheap. ;p

• Ughh I’ve been meaning to do a bodysuit tutorial for a really long time, and it still may be awhile before I get the time to make one. :o But here is a screenprinting Instructable I’ve been recommending to people. It’s the most cost-efficient way that teaches you the basics really nicely. :]

• If you’re just starting out, a nice way to learn is to buy a simple dress pattern and practice altering it to be something else (maybe to match a picture of a dress you are trying to copy). After you are comfortable with that, you can learn to make patterns from scratch using a book that teaches pattern drafting. :]

Haha, but really.. I started with these three photos (completely untouched) of me on top of our lovely kitchen heater:

I didn’t actually take them with the intention of photoshopping them together, but the background ended up so clean and light that I decided it would be simple enough to do. :]

Here is roughly what I did:

1. adjusted the levels of all 3 images until the lighting of each was very similar
2. used the clone tool to get rid of extras like the outlet
3. cut and pasted the photos together
4. smoothed and blended where the images overlap with clone in varying opacities

And… I got this. :D

Photoshopping just takes a lot of practice and messing around with tools. There are at least 10 different ways you can do the exact same thing. :]

I think online people call it two-tone hair, but I’m not sure if all hairdressers are familiar with it. Your best bet is probably to bring photos of something similar, and just describe it to her like you did here. :]

I use Tulip Soft Fabric Paint, Liquitex Basics acrylic paint, or sometimes a combination of the two. It takes a paintbrush and quite a few layers of paint usually. :]

Hotfix is like a tiny iron that you can use to attach special rhinestones (that have an iron-on backing). I’ve never actually tried it before though so I can’t say how well it works.. I buy cheap rhinestones in 1 pound buckets and attach them with Crafter’s Pick fabric glue.

If you’re attaching them to something stretchy like a bodysuit, you might want to glue them on while you’re wearing it. That way the rhinestones won’t prevent the fabric from stretching as much (does that make sense?..). Good luck on your cosplay!

The magazine (costume maker magazine for anyone who is interested) was only possible with tons of support from my parents and from many many awesome people online. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the contributions of costumers in online communities like deviantart and cosplay.com. All I did was organize submitted articles into layouts in InDesign, contacted advertisers and worked out the printing of the magazine. Pretty much all of the actual content was from talented costumers across the internet! :]

Everyone’s hair is different so there’s no guarantee that it will bleach the same. But yes, I bleach it myself. All hair is damaged after bleaching no matter what, but if your hair is thick and healthy to begin with it will hopefully minimize the damage (also a lot of conditioner helps). :]

I think your best bet would be to get a good brand name within your price range, specifically Brother or Singer. Those are usually really good quality, though I recommend you read up on reviews online first before actually purchasing. And aw, maybe we have twin cats~ ;p

edit: Oops, my twin Eva posted a tutorial about how to buy a sewing machine and I didn’t even know it! ^^; That should be super helpful~~

I used Tulip Soft Fabric paint. It’s a brush on kind rather than a squeeze bottle kind, which means it’s less 3D and easier to spread. Fabric paint in general shouldn’t come off or fade since it’s made to be wearable and go through the wash.

The white fabric I used was a knit fabric and is almost identical to t-shirt fabric. You could definitely just cut out an old white t-shirt instead of buying fabric. :]

Do you mean a crop top? All you need to do is cut the bottom off to your desired length. I personally usually sew up the hems, but that’s completely optional. Hope that helps!

Etsy makes it super simple to deal with fees. They don’t take too much; $0.20 is automatically charged for each item you list, and they also charge a small percentage of your profits once sold (not sure exactly how much off the top of my head).

Shipping is also not too complicated once you figure out how you want to do it. If you’re shipping light things, you can weigh them at home and print shipping labels through paypal, then leave the packages in your mailbox to get picked up. Or you can just take them straight to the post office and they will weigh and charge everything right there (I do it this way currently). Good luck on your shop!

You definitely don’t need a serger. :] I went 9 years of my life not even knowing they existed, haha. The main thing that sergers are used for is speed (and they work really well with knit fabric).

A sewing machine is plenty strong enough for clothing projects. And to be honest, “couture” sewing almost never uses a serger. Which shows that you can get good quality work by hand, machine or serger. :D

If you want to acheive a similar finish as a serger using a normal sewing machine, you can do both a zigzag stitch and a straight stitch on the same seam (I included a drawing below). The zigzag will help prevent fraying like a serger, and the straight stitch gives the seam extra strength.

Ahh I know, I’ve been talking about the tutorial I was making for awhile now. Truth is, now that school started again that tutorial’s been put on hold for a little. :o

But here is the link I’ve been referring people to -> Screen Printing: Cheap, Dirty, and at Home. :] It’s the most cost-efficient, though not the most “correct” or professional, method for people who want to learn the very basics of screenprinting.

I think online people call it two-tone hair (not exactly sure)? I bleached and dyed the colored portion of my hair, and the brown hair is actually my natural hair color. You might be able to ask her to dye and/or bleach one section and either leave the other section or dye that too.

I think one reason that my hair isn’t too damaged is because its naturally quite oily, to the point where I don’t really feel comfortable unless I wash it every morning (though once in a great while I’ll try not to). I use normal Herbal Essences shampoo and a lot of Garnier’s Triple Nutrition conditioner. Once in awhile I’ll also spray my hair with the Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray at night~

A thrift store is a store that sells used clothing and other items, basically almost everything you can think of from old printers to barbie dolls. Usually everything is donated to a thrift store, but certain stores buy their items and then re-sell them for a profit (these are called resale shops).

“Thrifted” in this sense means I found and bought the dress at a thrift store. :] And thanks!

BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL! There are so many dishonest, sketchy people online, especially in the modeling community. If an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never do something you’re uncomfortable with. Also, ALWAYS bring someone with you when going to meet someone you do not already know.

My parents got me a pair for christmas! *o* I purposely did not mention black milk leggings anywhere close to christmas because I didn’t want my parents to get them for me (they’re so expensive!!). But my dad remembered from last MAY when I showed him the r2d2 swimsuit on their site, and I probably showed him the leggings at the same time. So my dad looked around online, re-found their website and got me a pair. I’m amazed my parents remember these little things so well. <3

I haven’t posted about them yet because I feel so guilty, haha.. They’re easily one of the most expensive pieces of clothing I own. Most of my clothes nowadays are thrifted or diy-ed. But nevertheless I am in love with the leggings and there will probably be an outfit post including them soon..

YesyesYES, I have tons of unfinished projects. See these shoes? I never did the other shoe. I have a lolita dress all cut out and ready to sew in a ziploc bag, but it’s been sitting there at least 4 or 5 years. I only glittered one of these shoes.

The list goes on and on. So many costumes, dresses, accessories and projects that I’ve never completed. Sometimes I’ll keep them around just in case I get the will to finish them, especially if I know I’ll be happy with/wear the finished product.

But other times I’ve changed tastes already and I lose interest with the project. And when I know I won’t go back to them I toss them. It’s sad, but I know I’ll just start and accumulate more projects, and it leaves my life slightly less cluttered. ;p
