There’s something I really don’t understand..

Lately I’ve become really interested in 1920s american fashion and have been trying to do some research on the subject. Though I can’t find a lot of credible information online, I have found many genuine advertisements, drawings, etc from the era.

There’s one thing that confuses me. Why is the stereotypical flapper nowadays imagined with a black fringed-dress? So far I have found no completely fringed dresses through my research. Maybe a bit of fringe here and there, but nothing that resembles this:

Also, I’m pretty sure this dress is way too short for the average woman out on the town (maybe a length for performers? :p). Yes, dresses did shorten in the 1920s, but not that far up. I’m guessing the length of the image above is a result of the American need for.. revealing Halloween costumes,  but I’m still confused about the fringe. If anyone has answers I’d love to hear. :]
